Ugobe Store Sells Out Of Pleos

finger rightPictures, Videos, and more Information on Pleo.

This is what you see when you go to the Ugobe Online Store now:

If you are on the Ugobe update mailing list then you already heard the big news. In their most recent E-mail to the list they announced that The Ugobe store sold out of Pleos today. This means that the inventory they have allocated for the online store has already evaporated in the face of consumer demand. As a big Pleo fan I am not surprised by this, but it is still impressive to see the momentum Pleo is gaining, and it's not even out yet! Luckily there still are places to preorder Pleo, since Ugobe's retail partners still have inventory. Visit our Pleo retail partner page to see where you can still preorder a Pleo in the USA.

I am hoping that Ugobe and their retail partners do build enough Pleos to satisfy the needs of their holiday customers. There will be tons of eager people that will want to get a Pleo this holiday season!

Interview with Ugobe's Bob Christopher

Keith Shaw of Network World interviewed Bob Christopher, Ugobe's illustrious CEO. The 18 minute interview is chock full of interesting information about Pleo and Ugobe; including the trials and tribulations of creating the first adorable artificial life form. Bob goes into detail about Pleo's operating system and technology and how Pleo's architecture will faciliate the creation of fun new enhancements to Pleo in the way of new body movements, behaviors, and sounds. As an example of an interesting Ugobe company note that I didn't know about, Bob Christopher mentions that some of the top level talent at Ugobe came from Apple Computer, Inc.

My favorite quote by Bob which he attributes to Apple Computer's co-founder and marketing genius, Steve Jobs:
"If you wanna know how to make good software, learn how to make your own hardware".
Note: Watch your speakers. Clicking on the link goes to a page that plays the interview automatically. You can also download an MP3 of the interview for your iPod or other offline listening device.

Tech Digest Talks About Pleo

Tech Digest has a nice piece about Pleo in their latest blog post. In his usual fashion, Pleo inventor and Ugobe co-founder Caleb Chung wowed the author with his charm and technical knowledge; especially with his talented impressions of the clumsy physical movements of other consumer/toy robots. I have written previously on how Caleb's mastery of body mechanics, human and otherwise, is one of the key ingredients to Pleo's charm and endearing motion characteristics.

It's a good read with some cute Pleo photos so give it a go. Here's my favorite quote from the article where they mention Pleo's updated price:
"I guess Chung has to pay for his PRO DANCE SKILLZ DVDs somehow though!"

Pleo at Robogames

Pleo made a stealth appearance at this years Robogames event. Robogames is a competition founded by David Calkins where amateur robotics engineers try out their creations in various events like robot soccer, etc. John Sosoka brought along Pleo for an impromptu sneak preview that the attendees were lucky enough to witness. In this video you can see how everyone nearly mobs Pleo because of the irresistable urge to pet the little green cuddlesaurus. Watching this video definitely makes the wait for Pleo's October 2007 release date that much harder.

Just a short post to tell you about a wonderful web page that is on Pleo World, Ugobe's official support site for Pleo owners and Pleo owners to be. They have added a helpful page that shows where each sensor is in Pleo's body, and what it does. Just hover your mouse over any sensor name and the dynamic Pleo graphic will update to show you where the sensor is in Pleo's body along with a helpful paragraph that explains what the sensor does. Give it a try!
