Although not directly related to the Robosapien RS Media, I found the recent announcement from Fisher Price regarding their upcoming Elmo Live toy robot (animatronic) interesting. Elmo Live can wave his arms, stand, sit, bend his knees, and tell jokes or stories. I can't wait to make a video with my Robosapien RS Media robot as Elmosapien doing a skit with Elmo Live. You can be sure I'll be getting one as soon as they are available! For my fellow hackers, there is no word yet on whether or not Elmo Live is programmable or can be readily hacked. The biggest question at this time is whether or not you can create your own animations with him or add your own sounds.

Robosapien RS Media for less than $149!

It looks like the holiday nuttiness is happening again just like last year. Buy.com is letting the Robosapien RS Media robot go for a $149 while quantities last. This robot cost over $400 when I got mine. It is the same robot I created the Elmosapien and Vadersapien custom personalities for. Each personality has hundreds of custom sound files in them. Note a personality is a different set of custom sound and voice files and existing user defined scripts. It's not a new A.I. or anything like that.

The personality software can be daunting for a novice user, but even without the software it's one hell of a robot that comes complete with 4 different built-in personalities. If you get one, be sure to get the two custom personalities I mention above since they're free and of excellent quality (IMHO). Elmosapien got covered by pretty much every major gadget web site there is including: Engadget, Gizmodo, C|Net, etc. Ok, I'm bragging here but you can watch the video that went viral at the bottom of this post.

ElmoSapien! - New Elmo based custom personality

I just created a brand new custom personality for the Robosapien RS Media. It has over 210 unique voice files that will make your Robosapien RS Media sound and act like Elmo. USA : Wal-Mart now has Robosapien RS Media

Wal-Mart now has the Robosapien RS Media for sale. I've been having great fun with mine for the last few months, which I got overseas. In other news WowWee and Sun, Inc. are working out the kinks in getting a full fledged Java programming language SDK running on the Robosapien RS Media for the hard core programmer types out there. If you've been waiting to pick one up now's the time.

Just a note, the Robosapien RS Media is battery hungry. WowWee specifically tells you not to use rechargeable batteries so I have to give you that same recommendation. But I'd also have to tell you that I use Radio Shack rechargeable batteries in mine along with a RadioShack universal charger. I play with mine a lot and I'd spend a fortune in batteries if I didn't use rechargeables. You will have to make your own choice and take your own risks. Remember, the Robosapien RS Media uses 6 "D" cell batteries and 4 "AA" batteries. Here's some handy RadioShack links if you do decide to use rechargeables:

Robosapien RS Media and Java

Just a quick update post to let you know that Sun has produced a Java SDK for the Robosapien RS Media. This would allow you to write Java programs that run natively on the RS Media. There still getting some wrinkles ironed out, and the RS Media is still not available in many places, but I'll keep you updated as things unfold.

Engadget has an update on the Robosapien RS Media's price. This news is the result of a conversation with the WowWee folk at the CES 2007 show. According to the WowWee representative the price for the Robosapien RS Media will be $300 USD when it hits North America.

WowWee has created a site specifically to support the Robosapien RS Media. It has an extensive FAQ that covers the robot itself, the BodyCon music and animation editor program, the Macro Editor, and the Media Organizer. You will also find the official manual for the robot and the Editing Suite along with a QuickStart guide. Downloadable updates for the RS Media can be found on the site too.

In his usual fashion has already begun tearing apart the new robot from WowWee Toys and inventor Mark Tilden. Bad for his bot, good for us! In a long detailed thread on the Unofficial Robosapien Hacks and Mods forum, he shares what he's discovered so far about the Linux operating system and file system on the RS Media, and tidbits he's gleaned in regards to command macros and sensor data the robot puts out. Robosapien RS Media - Daily Telegraph Article (Australia)

The Daily Telegraph, an Australian publication, has a new article on the Robosapien RS Media that talks about the product launch in Sydney. There is not much new in article in the way of reported features, and only a single photograph of the lucky Robosapien RS Media posing with Miss Universe entrant Erin McNaught. The most highlighted feature of the robot was it's ability to store custom voice and multimedia files selected by the user and play them back; In this case, the voices of several celebrities including Ms. McNaught's.

The official web site for the Robosapien RS Media is now online. It's a very slick Flash based web site with supporting audio files. There are no videos on the site yet but hopefully that will change soon. The site does go into the technical specifications for the robot and confirms that the robot does indeed run an embedded form of Linux. In addition, the BodyCon movement editing and other customization software will run on computers running Windows XP. Many of the robot's features are broken out in different screens so you can get a good idea of what you can expect from the successor to the Robosapien V2.

Robosapien RS Media Exclusively Available At Debenhams Until October 21
